Learn About Windows XP
Introduction
Microsoft claims that Windows XP is the next-generation operating system for your computer. But is it worth the massive system requirements?
In this Feature How-To Article, Computer Training 2000 examines Beta 2 of Windows XP.
Learn About Windows XP
Basics
Microsoft Windows XP is built around the Windows 2000 code base, a very stable system compared to Windows 95/98. There are also lots of multimedia tools, and better integration with the Internet.
User Interface
The Windows XP user interface has been completely redesigned. When you first see the new interface, it can look confusing, but you will get used to it after a while.
Microsoft Windows 2000 user log on system is also carried on to Windows XP. When you first start up Windows, you will be presented with a log on screen with a list of usernames. To log on, click your username and enter your password. Each user can have customized privileges, along with a customized computer setup.
New Desktop features
Since Windows 2000 and Windows Millennium, Microsoft has been trying to keep the Desktop clear of clutter. When you add too many icons to the Desktop, Windows XP will ask you if you want to keep all of the icons. If not, Windows will move them to a folder on your computer.
The Start menu
The Start menu is finally more useful. When you click the new, more prominent bright green start button, you are presented with a two-column list of most common destinations. such as Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook E-mail.
My Computer
The My Computer and Explorer window makes it easier to work with files. When you open folders, a task pane (similar to Office XP), appears, allowing you to easily access common tasks.
New Control Panel
At first, the Control Panel looks confusing, but actually, it's easier to use than ever. Instead of the icons that you are familiar with in Windows 95 or 98, you see a screen of "themes" (example: Performanace and Maintenance). Once you click a theme, you are presented with the control panels that you can access for that theme.
Conclusion
Microsoft Windows XP is the next-generation operating system. Microsoft claims that it is the most important Windows release since Windows 95. We hope that this mini-review helps introduce you to the new and powerful features of Windows XP.
